“Genre bending”

- The National Post

Making waves from coast to coast

Described as “genre-bending” by the National Post, and “intrepid” by the Globe and Mail, Mark Fewer has performed around the world to critical acclaim in virtually every role asked of a violinist - and then some.

His regular musical diet includes performances from the early baroque to the avant-garde, with recent performances as soloist with groups as wide-ranging as the Melbourne Symphony (Australia), the Fodens-Richardson Brass Band (UK), the Zapp Quartet (Amsterdam), and the McGill Percussion Ensemble (Canada). He is also a dedicated chamber musician, jazz violinist, artistic director, and teacher.

Back in the swing of things

It's beginning to feel like "the before times" again!  And for those of us who are used to life on the road, it's a pretty great feeling.   There's lots of music to look forward to in the next year, and in the coming months we'll be renovating this site to reflect some of the adventures ahead.

For now, I'm delighted to tell you that the summer season began in earnest last month with a recording session in Prague and the Prague Epoque Orchestra of a new concerto written by David Braid for yours truly.  We'll be filling out the recording with improvised works for violin and piano - nothing written down, no plans made...just spontaneous "songs" we'll make up on the spot.  The release for this one will be the fall - and of course we'll have lots of information on it when the new site is up and running.

Between now and then, there will be another trip overseas for the soundScape festival in Switzerland (www.soundscapefestival.org) , followed by the start-up of Stratford Summer Music (check out this year's line-up here: www.stratfordsummermusic.ca), where, for the first time in my life I will be performing Messaien's Quartet for the End of Time (something I've been avoiding my whole life).  There are also performances at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival of the new work Carmen Braden has written for me entitled You Know Its Coming.  You Just Don't Know When.  Scored for the same combination as the famous Chausson Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet, this will be the second performance of it, with the premiere having happened in early May with Jeanie Chung on piano and the fabulous Thalea String Quartet.

The summer ends with a filming of Mystery of Clock. This is a very special work, having had starts and stops for more than 7 years.  Under the expert guidance of French superstar director Roland Auzet, the work is part theatre/part music.  A one-hour piece that features new music by composers from the Lyon Conservatoire in France, music technology students from the University of Toronto, and puts front and centre the awesome talents of percussionist Aiyun Huang (my partner) and myself.
